Inspecting The Attic
This customer wanted to reduce the ice damming occurring on her roof in the winter. Our specialist did a full evaluation of the attic to determine how well heat was being maintained in this space.
Insulation Elsewhere in the Home
Energy loss in a home can be caused by many different things, so it is important to our specialists to get a look at many different areas in the home.
Rim Joists that Leak Air
Rim joists that leak air are often a common cause of cold air entering a home. When this air enters the home it often pushes warm air out through the attic.
How Important Are the Windows?
Without properly insulated windows the home can be losing a significant amount of energy. Dr. Energy Saver offers highly efficient windows and well-insulated installation of those windows. Be sure to ask your specialist if you have old windows that may be losing energy.
Crawl Space Issues
It seems the crawl space is almost always a major contributor to energy loss problems in a home. As you can see here, the insulation does not look to have kept its properly installed position, so it will not be functioning at its advertised r-value.
Insulation and Air Sealing Around Pipes
Openings for pipes are often an overlooked area for heat and air to escape. If these spots are not properly air sealed and insulated a lot of heat can be leaving the home.
Insulated Doors and Entrances
Using the wrong door in your home can lead to a fast transfer of heat to the outside and can allow cold air to leak into the home. We provide our customers information on the current doors they use and how the doors we provide save energy.
Getting a Closer Look At the Attic
Here's a closer look at what our specialist sees in the attic.
Getting the Full Picture
This unconditioned space allows heat that wasn't contained by the insulation to pass through to the outside.
Garage Attic Entrance Hatch
This entrance to the attic if not properly insulated can allow a significant amount of air to pass into the attic, creating a less than comfortable environment in the home.
Another Under Insulated Attic Space
This attic space is being used as a small cold storage space. One option we provide our customers is to create a conditioned space in their attic. This type of space would allow for a more comfortable year round storage space.
The Old Insulation
The previous insulation has a lower R-value than the options we offer and it was an inadequate amount to give the homeowner the insulation benefits they were looking for.
Pipes and Ducts in Attics
These pipes and ducts travel through openings connected to the rest of the home. These openings can allow air from the attic to enter the home which creates an uncomfortable environment. Air Conditioning ducts can be affected by the fluctuating temperatures of the attic as well.
A Cold Entrance
This entrance provides very little protection from the outside world, so it is important to have another insulted door on the other side of this entrance.
Checking Every Nook and Cranny
Problems with a poorly air sealed or insulated home can stem from many different areas so it is important to get everything properly evaluated before moving forward with a project.
Heat Loss Through the Hatch
This photo clearly shows how any heat that enters through this hatch (even when it is closed) can escape quickly through the uninsulated roof.
Exterior Evaluation
Our specialists also check around the outside of the home to observe any particularly troubling areas.
Under-insulated and Pipe Openings
This attic space could use more insulation and it would be wise to check that pipe to make sure no air is escaping through where it enters and exits the attic space.
Crawl Space Insulation
This Crawl Space has issues with proper insulation and the insulation being properly installed and maintained.
Chipped Rim Joist Without Insulation
An area like this is hard to insulate with fiberglass batt insulation, but with spray foam insulation we can effectively seal and insulate this small but important area.
