Cold Crawl Space Insulation in Deer River, Minnesota
Challenge
This vented crawl space contained a furnace and water pipes which the homeowner did not want to freeze so they ran an electric heater as needed. Unfortunately, with the venting of the crawl space the heater could not perform efficiently as the heated air would escape through the open vents. Adding to this issue was the fact that several of the rim joists were either uninsulated or had been insulated improperly with insulation that did not aid in air sealing the rim joist. In addition to insulation concerns, the crawl space presented potential problems stemming from moisture from the dirt below.
Solution
To help the heater run efficiently it was necessary to insulate the entire crawl space. This amounted to our patented rigid foam board insulation called SilverGlow installed around the perimeter of the crawl space, spray foam insulation in the rim joists & previously vented areas and an encapsulation of the crawl space using our CleanSpace matting which helps to both insulate and air seal the crawl space. This matting eliminates the problems that the moist soil was causing in the home as well. This solution as a whole creates a much more pleasant environment in the home with the homeowner experiencing much more comfortable room temperatures and less worry about freezing pipes. This project also allows the customer to use the crawl space as a bright and clean storage space.
