Mud Room in Duluth, MN Repositioned Back Towards Structure Using Helical Piers
Challenge
This homeowner in Duluth, MN was facing problems with settlement and repositioning of their mudroom. It had started to pull away from the house over the past couple of years. This happens when the soil under and around the foundation expands and shrinks throughout the change in weather and climate during the year. The structure began to shift because it had been settling within the changing soil. The owner wanted to save the mudroom instead of tearing it down and rebuilding it because rebuilding the structure would have been out of their budget. Their expectations were that the mudroom would be moved as close and as tight as possible back to the house and for further movement to be stopped.
Solution
Foreman Trevor Ingle led the installation of this project, along with his crew. The team installed 2 helical piers, one PowerBrace™ Wall Bracing System, and a SmartJack® Support System. The helical piers are driven into the ground like a screw using hydraulic pressure. Once the pier reaches the maximum depth, which is until it reaches more stable, native soil, it then pushes against the foundation of the home in order to raise the structure. PowerBrace™ Systems are placed on the inside wall of the home for extra support to stopped any movement and to reposition the wall back to its original position. Finally, the SmartJack® System is used for support under the structure to raise any sagging or sinking floors. Together, these systems were able to stabilize and reposition the mudroom back towards the house. The owner will now be able to enjoy their home without worrying about it falling or having to tear it down and reconstruct it.
