Lacking Crawl Space Insulation and Sealing
It is already clear that this crawl space is not insulated in many areas and allows the outside environment in through several uncontrolled openings like the crack between the crawl space wall and dirt floor here.
Fiberglass Batt Insulation That Has Fallen
Fiberglass batt insulation is one of the cheapest ways to insulate a home, but it is only effective in insulating the home if it is installed and maintained properly. This insulation has fallen over time and it now provides a fraction of the advertised r-value when first purchased.
Some areas without any insulation at all
Some areas in this crawl space were lacking any insulation whatsoever. The thin sheet of wood you see here is the only thing insulating the home from the currently cold climate of the crawl space.
Exterior access to the crawl space
This access to the crawl space allows outside air and possibly critters to pass through when not shut properly.
Inspecting the Foundation
Having steel beams support the home is often a great choice, they won't get moldy or rot and they maintain their shape over time. Unfortunately, if the steel beams are improperly supported there can be problems within the home. Here we see how the steel is supported by a few stacks of concrete blocks and stacks of wood when appropriate. This is not a permanent way to support a foundation.
Wood Foundation Support
It appears that there have been problems with the concrete blocks here sinking. This has created the need for a wood support to be created with shims placed to reach the steel beam. Over time this temporary fix will go the same way of the concrete blocks and require further shims or replacement. If this is what your foundation looks like be sure to talk to our specialist to learn about the different options we offer and which one might be right for your situation.
