Basement Waterproofing Photo Album: Historic Train Depot in Duluth Protected with Waterproofing System

The Duluth Depot building was completed in 1892. One of the most iconic structures of the downtown landscape, it is situated at the bottom of the Duluth hillside, just a stone's throw from the water's edge. So it's no surprise that the Depot's lower level had issues with moisture and wetness from time to time. The city of Duluth contacted DBS for assistance in preventing water from committing further damage to this historic building.DBS Design Specialist Henrik Makitalo visited the Depot and provided a thorough estimate and a custom plan to protect the building from water intrusion. This French Norman-style building was built with local granite, sandstone, and yellow brick, making the walls thick! We worked with Superior Diamond Concrete Cutting to properly drill a hole through the building for a new discharge line. DBS Foreman Joe Harris and his team installed 55 feet of WaterGuard® at the foundation footing. Designed to capture water seepage through walls and leaks along the wall and floor joint, this drain system effectively captures wall and floor seepage before it reaches the floor. Water enters the system via inlet holes and flows through the drainage pipe to the sump pump.After the drain was successfully installed and connected to a new sump pump, our team completed the discharge line installation and covered the drain tile with new concrete. The Depot now has a rock-solid system to combat water intrusion on its lower level.
