A hot summer in Northern Minnesota = High AC bills?
One of my roommates opened the bill for our AC and her jaw dropped. Sure Duluth, MN had a hot month last month, and true one of our roommates loves to freeze, but we seemed to be cooling the outside air according to our bill!
After seeing how much we pay for the AC, it made me start thinking about the winter ahead of us. Knowing Duluth, it should be a cold one. If we do not have proper insulation, our heat bills will be just as high.
Understand Your Home
Let me explain a little about our house, in order to keep the main level cool enough to the degree that my one roommate is comfortable (typically 68 degrees), the basement ends up being a slightly chilly 50-some-odd degrees. That is a little excessive! Yet we keep it that way because our upstairs gets way too warm otherwise.
Why is that?
There are many different reasons. One reason I could see for myself and was an easy fix was that in one of the basement bedrooms there was an air vent with no vent cover. Any time the air would kick on, cold air would pour into that one room. Get a vent cover up there to slow the air flow and regulate it between the other rooms.
Other reasons may not be that easy to see. Perhaps our upstairs was improperly insulated, or maybe our attic was low on insulation. Maybe our doors or windows were of low quality and let air in and out. What ever it was, one simple phone call could have solved our problems.
