What are Ice Dams?
Ice Dams are blockages of ice that form on roofs.
Ice dams are caused by the layers of snow closest to the roof melting, then refreezing. These layers of snow melt because of a lack of proper insulation or air-sealing in the home’s attic or upper level. Warm air in the attic space leaks out of the home through the roof, melting the snow, then it runs down the roof to the edge and freezes again, causing the ice dams. This snow melt can also leak through the shingles into the home. If ice dams are not properly fixed in a timely manner, they can cause additional damage including ripped shingles, broken gutters, structural roof damage, and if the water does soak through the roof, mold and mildew could become an issue.
How do I prevent ice dams from forming on my home’s roof?
To prevent ice dams and improve energy, you need to ensure your home has proper insulation in the attic. Any potential spots for air leaks should be air sealed and your insulation should be up to energy code requirements. Ventilating the attic properly may be an option to consider, as well.
