What is really happening behind that little door on your upper level? Knee walls are commonly found in finished attic spaces, and provide support to rafters in timber roof construction projects. Typically standing under three feet tall, a knee wall spans from the ridge to the eaves of the attic. This additional structural support can come with a cost if not properly sealed. When an attic and knee wall are not properly insulated, outdoor air enters the home and leads to problems like ice dams, high heating and cooling costs, and increased allergens circulating throughout the home.

Typically, builders insulate a new build with fiberglass batts between the studs, in combination with blown insulation between the floor joists. When air flows through the soffit vents, the insulation is weakened over time and often falls, offering no protection. Applying closed-cell spray foam along the roof deck, joists, windows, and soffit vents will completely seal-off outdoor air from entering the home.

DBS offers SilverGlo™ paneling to properly insulate and seal the roof deck area of the knee wall space. The roof slopes are now sealed and ready to be densely packed with TruSoft™ cellulose to stop airflow and provide additional insulation. Dense packing does not require removal of the interior drywall. The flat ceiling is then insulated with 18” inches of TruSoft™ cellulose insulation. Once a home is made air-tight with proper insulation, homeowners see a drastic reduction in heating and cooling costs, have more protection against ice dam formation, and experience healthier air quality.
